Background of the Study

Excise taxes are specific taxes imposed on the production, sale, or consumption of certain goods, typically products considered harmful to health or the environment, such as tobacco, alcohol, and sugary beverages. In Nigeria, the imposition of excise taxes on alcoholic beverages is an important revenue generation tool for the government. In recent years, the Nigerian government has increased excise taxes on various consumer goods, including alcohol, in an effort to raise revenue, reduce the consumption of harmful products, and address public health concerns related to excessive alcohol consumption.

The Nigerian alcoholic beverage industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, providing employment, contributing to government revenue, and playing a role in the country’s cultural and social life. The excise tax on alcoholic beverages is intended to increase government revenue, discourage excessive consumption, and encourage the development of healthier alternatives. However, one of the major concerns is the effect of excise taxes on the prices of consumer goods, especially for the average Nigerian consumer.

Excise taxes are typically passed on to consumers through higher prices for taxed products. This study will focus on how changes in excise taxes on alcoholic beverages affect the retail prices of these products, and subsequently, consumer behavior and consumption patterns. By examining this relationship, the study aims to contribute valuable insights into the effectiveness of excise taxes as a policy tool for regulating consumption and generating revenue.

Statement of the Problem

The imposition of excise taxes on alcoholic beverages in Nigeria has led to increased prices for these goods. However, the extent to which excise taxes directly influence consumer goods prices, particularly in the alcoholic beverage industry, remains unclear. This study seeks to examine the effect of excise taxes on the prices of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria, and how these price changes affect consumer demand and overall consumption behavior in the industry.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of excise taxes on the prices of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria.
  2. To examine the effect of excise taxes on consumer demand for alcoholic beverages.
  3. To evaluate the broader economic impact of excise taxes on the Nigerian alcoholic beverage industry.

Research Questions

  1. How do excise taxes affect the prices of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria?
  2. What is the relationship between excise taxes and consumer demand for alcoholic beverages?
  3. What are the economic implications of excise taxes on the Nigerian alcoholic beverage industry?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Excise taxes do not significantly affect the prices of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria.
  2. H0: Excise taxes do not have a significant impact on consumer demand for alcoholic beverages in Nigeria.
  3. H0: Excise taxes do not have a significant economic impact on the Nigerian alcoholic beverage industry.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the Nigerian alcoholic beverage industry, examining the effect of excise taxes on prices and consumer demand from 2015 to 2025. Limitations include the challenge of accurately measuring consumer behavior and the potential for external factors, such as inflation, to influence the prices of alcoholic beverages.
